What is your blog about?

Mine is a parenting and lifestyle blog which allows me to wax lyrical about anything that takes my fancy. My background is legal services marketing and I worked in Cardiff for a number of law firms for 20 years so I love writing about business but I’m also fascinated by psychology and write a weekly problem page.

When did you first start blogging?

I left my job as marketing director for a Cardiff law firm in 2007 to have Caitlin and Ieuan follow in 2009.  I started to blog on and off in 2012 but have been ‘full time’ since 2015.  It’s an amazing hobby and the blogging community are really supportive.

What is your motivation behind blogging?

Initially it was to ‘keep my hand in’ in case I returned to work. There are so many related skills you need – an understanding of SEO, Social Media, Photography, Design, Copywriting, Pitching to brands – the list is endless. There are literally not enough hours in the day.

I have never had such an absorbing hobby – which has now become a full time job.

What do you find most challenging about blogging?

Many of the blogging opportunities are very ‘London-centric’ and although there is a growing number of Welsh bloggers, networks such as yours are really needed to help bring us to the notice of some of the bigger brands.

I think Welsh bloggers have a unique voice that needs to be heard.

Many of the blogging conferences and workshops, for example Mumsnet and Britmums are in London and I suspect the same is true for the other blogging niches.

What is your top tip for someone looking to start a blog?

Just start writing. Seriously. You can have a free blog on Google Blogger which will allow you to try your hand at blogging.

So many new bloggers get hung up on the bells and whistles, branding, viewing figures and even how to monetize their blog.

I tell them you need to have readers first – and engaged readers who enjoy what you write. You need a good bank of well written copy.

Get that right and everything else will follow.

Blogging is definitely a marathon and not a sprint.

What is the best thing a blogger can give to its reader?

I try to give my readers something useful to take away with my posts – particularly my problem page!

Readers want tips, hacks, and well researched advice (or the benefit of your experience) to use immediately to solve their problems.

What do you do when you’re not blogging?

The family love to eat out (to spare them my cooking) and we are spoiled for choice locally, particularly in the Bay which is 10 minutes away from us or we explore our local beauty spots, such as Dyffryn Gardens or Cosmeston.

The kids love our local castles too. Caerphilly is a particular favourite.
