Blogger: Phil Rowlands (@phil_rowlands)

Blog Name: Tales from Wales

URL: https://tales-from-wales.blogspot.co.uk/

What is your blog about?

Essentially writing but specifically it is aimed at encouraging, supporting and informing aspiring and self published Welsh writers.

When did you first start blogging?

My first serious blog post was published on February 2nd, 2012. Having retired and self published my first novella I decided to create a blog and share my experience. The blog, Kindle Authors (https://kindleauthors.blogspot.co.uk/ ), featured the work of self published authors worldwide.. I also shared what I had learned both technically and from a writing perspective. Guest authors like Jonathon Gunson from New Zealand also contributed.

What is your motivation behind blogging?

My motivation was to share with and encourage other writers as well as feature many in the blog. As a consequence I became involved in a joint venture with Ceri Shaw who hosts the AmeriCymru.net website. He wanted to create a bi-annual anthology for Welsh writers and as he was based in Portland, Oregon asked if I would help source authors from Wales.

We produced two editions of ETO but sadly the venture appears to have stalled. With the encouragement of my local writing group I decided to start the Tales From Wales website and blog very much in the vein of Kindle Authors but with a more focused Welsh perspective.

My passion is to help and encourage anyone who wants to write by providing:

  1. a platform for their work.
  2. help with getting their work into print.

I would also like to extend the venture to include bloggers.

What do you find most challenging about blogging?

Content is no problem. As with most writing the biggest challenge is being disciplined enough to write and publish regular posts.

What is your top tip for someone looking to start a blog?

Only blog about something for which you have a passion.

What is the best thing a blogger can give to its reader?

Provide readers with content that will enable them to achieve their writing ambitions. Encouragement sprinkled with humour and hopefully, common sense.

What do you do when you’re not blogging?

Write novels and create math videos and programs for the American homeschooling market. I also help out three mornings a week at our local primary school. In the summer bowls takes over my life. I have even written a novel based on the characters I’ve met – it’s not a technical book!
